Smile Spokane: A History of Action

Smile Spokane is the evolution of efforts by a passionate group of community leaders, organizations and oral health professionals working diligently to improve oral health in Spokane. For many years, partners such as the Washington State Board of Health, Empire Health Foundation, Arcora Foundation, the Spokane District Dental Society and others have led the charge in promoting community awareness and education on the importance of oral health in Spokane.

Creating a healthier Spokane by advancing oral health for all

The success and momentum of those early efforts led to the formation of Smile Spokane and the adoption of the mission to create a healthier Spokane by advancing oral health for all. The Smile Spokane partnership has grown to include more than 40 partners representing a diverse cross-section of Spokane.

Collectively, we are dedicated to championing strategies that improve oral health, including the promotion of fluoridation as a safe, cost effective and equitable means of improving oral health.

Current Strategies

In addition to mobilizing champions to promote a healthier Spokane by advancing oral health for all, our efforts for 2016 are to;

  • Host Spokane’s 3rd annual “Teeth Week”, a community wide event that encourages Spokane to take care of its teeth.
  • Educate the community through social media, print materials, and in person presentations of the importance of oral health.
  • Train health workers, including both medical and dental professionals, on the oral health status of Spokane and the newest science on fluorides and fluoridation.
  • Help promote the protection of teeth by using sports guards, and what to do in a dental emergency.

The intention of these activities is to support the people of Spokane in maintaining good oral health practices for a lifetime.
